A pub - a little bit of everything

Now for something a bit different… The Pear Tree pub which sits conveniently across the road from me (less than a 2 min walk). This has loads of different foods to choose from so its one of those places you should go to when you don’t have something specific in mind! I obviously have to walk past this little place all the time on my way in and out of my house but I never thought to go there. My boyfriend suggested it when we were having a lazy day and he had read that it actually had some really good reviews. And it was really good!

This is definitely a hidden gem. From the outside it doesn’t look all that special but once we walked in we found that it had lots of people, families and couples enjoying their Sunday lunches! It goes back quite far as well, which you wouldn’t expect as it looks tiny from the front. The atmosphere was very relaxed but still had an element of elegance. Everyone was dressed nicely and the décor, whilst homely, still had a touch of sophistication.

The lighting in the restaurant is dark and atmospheric, even in the middle of the day it seemed as though the room was lit just by candles! There were a lot of candles though – on every dining table and surface. It makes it feel very romantic. You get a sense that you have gone back in time when you enter this restaurant. The loo had carpeting in it, which freaks me out a bit but reminds me of old fashioned bathrooms. There were candles and silver-framed black and white photos all the around the bathroom too; and to flush the loo you had to pull one of those chains (very vintage!). Overall it is very homely and sweet . I loved the mismatching cutlery and crockery. Everyone had different plates – it almost felt like we were eating in a vintage charity shop or something. There weren’t any menus; all the meals were dotted around the walls on blackboards which is a fun idea but actually it was a bit annoying to have to walk around looking at each thing and trying to remember all the dishes! But the food was really good so I’m not complaining.

I don’t know how much the bill came to as my boyfriend so kindly treated me to it :) I think the mains were about £8 to £10 and the puddings were around the £5 mark.

Ours meals…
1. Prawns on toast – I had these delicious garlic prawns on buttered toast next to a dressed bed of rocket leaves. So simple and yet so yummy.

2. I also had a side of French fries with garlic mayonnaise, which were so good – I love thin soggy chips; I prefer them to the usual fat chips you get in pubs.

3. Toast with pate – again, such a simple meal but done really well.

4. And to finish, tasty chocolate pud – mmmmm… my idea of heaven. It was more like a chocolate fondant and oozed chocolate goo from the middle. It was warm and pure bliss, it came with a dollop of mascarpone. Perfect pudding!
